The Unprecedented Absence of MS Dhoni in IPL 2026

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season will go down in history for many reasons, but perhaps none more significant than the complete absence of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon MS Dhoni. For the first time since the inception of the cash-rich league, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman did not play a single match. Throughout the season, millions of fans eagerly waited to see their favorite star take the field, yet they were left disappointed as CSK struggled and ultimately bowed out of the tournament. The mystery surrounding Dhoni’s fitness and the franchise’s handling of the situation have now sparked a massive controversy, drawing sharp criticism from former cricketers and pundits alike.

A Timeline of Injury and Uncertainty

The saga of MS Dhoni’s availability was a roller-coaster of conflicting reports and rising uncertainty. Initially, reports emerged that the veteran cricketer was ruled out for two weeks due to a calf strain. Supporters remained optimistic, expecting a quick recovery. As the league stage progressed, further reports suggested that Dhoni had recovered and was on track to feature in a few crucial matches for the Chennai-based franchise. However, hope quickly turned into despair. Just before CSK’s critical final league encounter against the Gujarat Titans, Dhoni reportedly suffered a thumb injury, further delaying his return. He subsequently returned to his hometown of Ranchi, with reports indicating that he would only rejoin the squad if CSK managed to secure a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately, that playoff dream was shattered when CSK suffered a heavy 89-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans, officially ending their campaign and confirming that Dhoni would miss an entire IPL season for the first time in his career.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth Serves Verbal Notice to CSK Management

The handling of MS Dhoni’s injury updates did not sit well with former Indian selector and legendary opening batsman Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Speaking on his YouTube show following CSK’s final league match, Srikkanth launched a scathing attack on the CSK management, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and head coach Stephen Fleming. Srikkanth accused them of intentionally creating false hopes and misleading the passionate fan base who had been waiting anxiously to see Dhoni play. He expressed his frustration at the repetitive cycle of optimistic statements followed by sudden injury updates, terming the entire process as a form of deception.

Stop This Deception – Srikkanth Demands Franchise Transparency

During his broadcast, Srikkanth did not hold back in criticizing the franchise’s communications. “Before the season started, they said he has got a leg injury and that they are hoping to have him soon. Fleming also sang the same song, Ruturaj Gaikwad also sang the same: He might be ready for the next match,” Srikkanth remarked. He went on to highlight how the franchise actively fueled speculation by posting training videos online. “And then before the match, CSK will have a video of Dhoni training to show the fans and hint he is fit and he might play. Then they said, ‘no, no. He is still recovering from the injury’. And then they said he got injured in the thigh. Stop this deception. You should make it clear. If he is not going to play the entire season, fair enough. Fans would have been mentally prepared had you made that clear,” Srikkanth added, emphasizing that the loyal supporters deserved honesty rather than constant, misleading updates.

CSK’s On-Field Struggles in the Absence of Their Leader

Without the calming presence and tactical genius of MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings struggled immensely to find their rhythm in IPL 2026. Under the leadership of young captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, the five-time champions lacked consistency and looked a shadow of their former selves. The ‘Yellow Army’ managed to secure only six victories and accumulated 12 points from their 14 league matches. This poor run of form meant that CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third consecutive season, a highly unusual slump for one of the most successful franchises in IPL history. While there were brief signs of a late-season recovery—largely aided by crucial contributions from opener Sanju Samson—it proved to be too little, too late. The lack of clarity surrounding Dhoni’s fitness, combined with on-field inconsistency, left the franchise and its fans facing a highly disappointing end to the season.
