CSK’s Average Season in IPL 2026: A Call for Rebuild and Reboot
Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) average season in IPL 2026 has raised concerns, with the team struggling with player fitness and inconsistent performances. The team’s bowling coach, Eric Simons, feels that despite the challenges, CSK have learned a lot about themselves as a unit and as individuals, but Abhinav Mukund isn’t happy with the team’s overall performance.
Player Fitness: A Major Concern
One of the major issues CSK faced this season was player fitness. MS Dhoni didn’t play at all due to a calf injury, while Nathan Ellis was ruled out before the season started with a hamstring injury. The team also lost the services of Ayush Mhatre, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Jamie Overton at various points, which affected their overall performance.
Simons stated, ‘Someone like Kartik [Sharma] came along magnificently this season. We know what he’s about. Obviously, these established players, we’ve always known who they were and what they are.‘ However, Abhinav pointed out that CSK’s six wins were against weaker teams, and they failed to shift the needle against top teams.
Overseas Setup and Player Replacements
Before the season started, CSK made significant changes, including trading in Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals (RR) in place of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. However, Abhinav feels that the team’s overseas setup and player replacements need to be re-evaluated.
Abhinav said, ‘The Sanju Samson trade to me was a success because that’s something they addressed from last season, the top. But after that, what happens to your bowling resources?‘ He also pointed out that the team’s overseas players, such as Matt Henry, Matt Short, Zak Foulkes, and Dian Forrester, may not make the cut for next season.
A Call for Rebuild and Reboot
CSK’s average season in IPL 2026 has sparked concerns over the team’s overall performance and strategy. With the team’s inconsistent performances and player fitness issues, it’s clear that a rebuild and reboot are necessary. Abhinav’s comments highlight the need for the team to re-evaluate their overseas setup and player replacements, and to focus on strengthening their Indian talent.
