A New Era for Tamil Nadu Cricket

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has officially confirmed that former seamer Yo Mahesh will take the reins as the head coach for the state’s senior team for the upcoming 2026-27 domestic season. The 38-year-old appointment, sanctioned by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), marks a fresh chapter for a side that struggled significantly during the previous campaign.

Yo Mahesh is tasked with leading both the red-ball and white-ball outfits. This promotion follows his successful tenure overseeing the Tamil Nadu Under-19 squads, where he earned praise for his tactical acumen and player development skills. He takes over the responsibilities previously split between M Senthilnathan and M Venkataramana. During the 2025-26 season, the team faced mounting challenges, failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Supporting the Transition

To bolster the coaching staff, the TNCA has appointed J Hariesh as the assistant coach for the white-ball leg of the season. Hariesh brings a wealth of experience, currently serving as the head coach for the Lyca Kovai Kings in the TNPL and as an assistant batting coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL. His collaboration with Yo Mahesh is expected to provide a modern, data-driven approach to white-ball cricket.

Reflecting on his own career, Yo Mahesh retired from professional cricket in 2020 with a respectable record. Across 50 first-class matches, he claimed 108 wickets, while his List A tally stood at 93 wickets at an impressive average of 24.67. Having played for the Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, his experience at the top level is expected to be a guiding light for the younger players in the dressing room.

Mumbai Looks to Experience with Sandeep Patil

While Tamil Nadu focuses on youth and fresh ideas, Mumbai has opted for the wisdom of a legend. Former World Cup winner Sandeep Patil has been appointed as the team mentor for the upcoming domestic season. At 69, Patil brings decades of experience, having represented India in 29 Tests and 45 ODIs during his playing career from 1980 to 1986. His contribution to India’s maiden 1983 World Cup victory remains a seminal moment in the country’s cricketing history.

Patil’s coaching credentials are equally storied, with stints managing the India A team and guiding the Kenyan national team on the international stage. His presence as a mentor is widely seen as a strategic move to stabilize the Mumbai dressing room and provide strategic oversight.

Stability at the Helm for Mumbai

Complementing the arrival of Sandeep Patil, the Mumbai setup will maintain continuity in its core coaching staff. Omkar Salvi has been retained as the head coach for a fourth consecutive season. Salvi’s reputation has grown significantly in recent years, largely due to his role as the bowling coach for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he played a pivotal part in securing back-to-back IPL titles.

The combination of Salvi’s tactical leadership and Patil’s mentorship is expected to provide Mumbai with the necessary balance to remain a dominant force in the Indian domestic circuit. Both teams are now firmly set on their paths as they prepare for the rigors of the upcoming season, aiming to rectify the inconsistencies of the past and return to the pinnacle of domestic success.
