Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Sylhet Cricket

Behind every boundary hit, every diving catch, and every successful match lies the tireless effort of individuals who rarely step into the limelight: the ground staff. Recognizing their invaluable contribution, a group of former cricketers and passionate sports organizers in Sylhet recently launched a heartfelt initiative to celebrate these workers ahead of the Eid festivities.

A Gesture of Appreciation

To honor their hard work, the initiative saw the distribution of Eid gifts valued at BDT 100,000. This contribution serves as a sincere gesture of appreciation for the ground staff of the Sylhet District Sports Association, whose daily dedication ensures that cricket facilities remain in top condition for players and fans alike.

Prominent Voices Stand in Support

The event was a gathering of notable figures within the local sporting landscape, including former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Rajin Saleh and Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi, an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. Their presence underscored the significance of acknowledging the support staff who keep the gears of local sports turning.

Speaking on the importance of the event, Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi remarked, “Ground workers quietly play a very important role in keeping sports facilities and activities running smoothly. This initiative is our way of recognizing their contribution and sharing the joy of Eid with them.”

Personal Connections and Long-term Commitment

For many, the connection to these staff members goes far beyond professional duty. Rajin Saleh, who has graced some of the biggest stages in world cricket, shared an emotional perspective on his ties to the local ground crew. “My cricket journey started from this very ground,” Saleh said. “Because of that, many of the ground workers feel like family to me. My connection with them is not only through cricket, but also from the heart.”

The initiative was also supported by key figures from the Sylhet cricketing hierarchy, including Sylhet First Division Cricket League secretary Kabir Ahmed, vice president Khubeb Ahmed, joint secretary Evan Chowdhury, and district cricket coach Rana Mia. Their participation signals a broader cultural shift within the local sports administration to prioritize the welfare of support staff.

A Promise Kept

Kabir Ahmed highlighted that this act of kindness is part of a larger, ongoing mission. “Since the beginning of the league, we promised to give ground workers the respect they truly deserve,” Ahmed noted. “This initiative is part of continuing that commitment.”

As the local sports community continues to grow, initiatives like this serve as a powerful reminder that the true spirit of cricket lies in the camaraderie and mutual respect shared between everyone involved, from the players on the field to the workers maintaining the pitch. By elevating the profile of these essential contributors, the Sylhet sporting community is setting a positive example for others to follow, ensuring that no one involved in the game is left behind during times of celebration.

Looking Ahead

The success of this Eid initiative has sparked widespread praise across the region. It highlights a growing awareness that the longevity of sports hinges on the well-being of the entire workforce. As these staff members prepare to celebrate the holidays, they do so with the knowledge that their efforts are seen, valued, and deeply appreciated by the very people who rely on their dedication every single day.
