The Rise of a Prodigy: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Earns India Call-Up
In the highly competitive landscape of Indian cricket, it is rare for a teenager to capture the attention of the national selectors so comprehensively. Yet, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has done exactly that. Following a sensational run in the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced that the selection panel had little choice but to hand the young batsman his maiden international call-up. Sooryavanshi has been included in the India squad for the upcoming T20I series in Ireland and England, as well as the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games.
Forcing His Way Into the National Setup
According to Agarkar, the selection committee was effectively forced to act due to the sheer weight of Sooryavanshi’s performances. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2026 IPL season, the young left-hander amassed an incredible 776 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30. His explosive batting single-handedly propelled the franchise into the playoffs, cementing his reputation as one of the most destructive young batsmen in the country.
“I think he just has picked himself really,” Agarkar said during his press conference. “With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him with how well he has played. For a young kid… I don’t need to talk about how well he is playing. And it’s not just this season. He obviously had a great start to his IPL career last season.”
Agarkar emphasized that performing consistently in a tournament as high-pressured as the IPL is a testament to the teenager’s immense capability. “And to back it up for a young kid in a competition that’s as competitive and has a high-pressure environment, and how explosive he can be and a game-changer that he can be. Like everyone else that has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him,” Agarkar added.
A Historic Start to His Career
Sooryavanshi first made global headlines during the 2025 IPL season when, at just 14 years of age, he became the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history. He achieved the milestone by smashing a breathtaking 38-ball 101 against the Gujarat Titans. What particularly impressed the selectors, however, was not just the volume of runs, but his fearlessness against world-class opposition. In the 2026 edition, his aggressive approach against elite international bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc convinced the national selectors that he was ready for the international arena.
Acknowledging the player’s age and rapid development, Agarkar noted the clear jump in quality from age-group cricket to the senior level. “I know his age, and how young he is, and how early in his career but two IPLs in a row [he has done well],” Agarkar said. “We know what he was doing at the Under-19 level, and that’s probably perhaps a step down to what the IPL is or slightly lower [than what] senior cricket is. But we can all see what kind of talent he has. We’re hopeful that if and when he gets an opportunity to actually play for the country, he shows us the same sort of ability that he’s shown.”
The transition to international cricket presents unique challenges, but the selection panel believes Sooryavanshi has the mental strength to succeed. “Obviously, there will be tougher challenges when he plays for the country, but he’s shown great promise and temperament. We always deliberate because there’s so much talent around, especially when it comes to T20 cricket at this point. But it tells you a lot that his performances have made us pick him, and we’re very hopeful,” Agarkar explained.
Patience with Red-Ball Cricket
While the excitement around Sooryavanshi’s T20 prowess is undeniable, the chief selector was quick to temper expectations regarding other formats, particularly Test cricket. In his eight first-class appearances so far, the young batsman has scored 207 runs, with a personal best of 93. Agarkar stressed that the coaching staff and selectors would take a measured approach to his multi-day career.
“I just explained his performances have made us pick him in the format that he’s excelled over the last couple of seasons of the IPL,” Agarkar stated. “With regards to red ball, I mean, he’s a kid. He’s just starting his journey, and I’m sure when the domestic season starts and he plays for his team, plays a bit of red-ball cricket, we will wait and observe. At this point why jump the gun?”
Ultimately, the immediate goal is to support Sooryavanshi as he transitions into the T20I team without placing undue pressure on him. “We’re very excited with what he’s doing in T20 cricket. And hopefully, you know, us as selectors or the BCCI and the coaching staff can help him push in the right direction. At this point, we’re just focused on what he can bring to the T20 team, and we’ll take one step at a time,” Agarkar concluded.
