A Season of Learning Beyond the Boundary

In the high-pressure world of professional cricket, match time is often considered the only metric for success. However, New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra offers a different perspective following his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the 2026 Indian Premier League. Despite not making a single appearance on the field, the talented youngster views his stint in India as a pivotal chapter in his professional development.

The Mentorship of Veterans

Ravindra spent the majority of the tournament supporting his teammates from the dugout. Rather than viewing the lack of game time as a setback, he embraced the opportunity to shadow some of the game’s most astute minds. Among those who left a lasting impression was KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane.

For Ravindra, access to Rahane’s wealth of experience—particularly his technical prowess in challenging overseas conditions like England and Australia—was invaluable. Reflecting on these interactions, Ravindra noted, ‘There are massive benefits to being in the IPL too. You get to talk to someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who is a lovely man and has played so much cricket overseas, including scoring a hundred at Lord’s.’

A Support Staff Built for Excellence

Beyond the captain’s guidance, Ravindra benefited from the technical expertise within the KKR support staff. He engaged extensively with coach Abhishek Nayar, whose previous tenure as an assistant batting coach for the Indian national team provided a unique edge. Furthermore, the presence of former Australian great Shane Watson added another layer of high-level coaching, with Watson sharing insights gleaned from years of international competition and coaching.

Conversations with Icons

The collaborative environment of the IPL provided the Kiwi star with rare access to some of the biggest names in the sport. Ravindra revealed that he took the opportunity to speak with stalwarts like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul during the season. These interactions allowed him to gain a deeper understanding of the mental and physical preparations required to sustain success at the highest level of international cricket.

‘It is more than just the T20 format,’ Ravindra explained. ‘Being able to sit down and talk to Virat about batting or talking to KL Rahul—all these guys who have done well and had success over periods of time—was a massive learning experience.’

Gratitude for a Supportive Franchise

As the international calendar intensifies, the mental and physical toll of professional cricket becomes apparent. Ravindra expressed deep gratitude toward the Kolkata Knight Riders for their empathy regarding his personal and professional schedule. The franchise allowed him to return home early to recharge before embarking on New Zealand’s challenging Test assignments in Ireland and England.

‘KKR was very welcoming and understanding,’ said Ravindra. ‘They told me to go home, refresh, and do what I need before joining the boys in Ireland. It made it easier since I wasn’t playing. It’s a great little refresh, as we spend so much time away from home.’

Looking Ahead: The Test Season

Armed with the knowledge gained in the KKR camp, Ravindra is now shifting his focus toward the traditional format of the game. He is set to feature in New Zealand’s one-off Test against Ireland, which begins on May 27 in Belfast. Following that encounter, the team will head to England for a highly anticipated three-match Test series, starting at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground on June 4. The lessons learned in the IPL dugout, combined with this period of rest, ensure that the young star is well-prepared for the rigors of the upcoming international campaign.
