The Battle of the Speedsters: GT vs RR Qualifier 2

The stage is set for a monumental showdown in IPL 2026. On Friday, May 29, the Gujarat Titans (GT) are scheduled to lock horns with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. With a spot in the final against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on the line, the pressure is mounting for both franchises. Among the many sub-plots of this encounter, the duel between two express pacers—Kagiso Rabada and Jofra Archer—has become the talk of the cricketing fraternity.

The Strategic Shift to Raw Pace

Former India opening batter and seasoned commentator Aakash Chopra has offered a compelling analysis of how both bowlers have evolved this season. According to Chopra, the credit for the recent efficiency of these two pacers goes to their respective coaching setups. Under the guidance of GT head coach Ashish Nehra and RR bowling mentor Shane Bond, Rabada and Archer appear to have abandoned their over-reliance on slower deliveries in favor of high-velocity, hard-length bowling.

“Kagiso Rabada is bowling like fire. The bro is proper fire, but Jofra is no less. He is also bowling at 150 kph,” Chopra noted. “I think both bowling coaches have said something in their ears, that they should bowl length balls and fast, and stay far away from slower ones.”

Chopra pointed out that both players were previously guilty of experimenting too much with cutters—Rabada with his off-cutters and Archer with his leg-cutters. By simplifying their approach and focusing on rhythm and pace, they have become far more lethal. The statistics back this up: GT has secured 31 Powerplay wickets this season, while RR follows closely with 29, largely due to the dominance of these two speed merchants.

Statistically Speaking

The numbers illustrate the vital roles these two bowlers have played for their respective sides throughout the 2026 campaign:

  • Kagiso Rabada (GT): 26 wickets in 15 innings at an economy rate of 9.48.
  • Jofra Archer (RR): 24 wickets in 15 matches at an economy rate of 9.17.

Given these figures, both pacers are undoubtedly the engines driving their teams’ bowling attacks, and their performance in Mullanpur will likely dictate the momentum of Qualifier 2.

The Rashid Khan Conundrum

While the focus is on the pacers, Aakash Chopra raised an interesting tactical question regarding Gujarat Titans’ star leg-spinner, Rashid Khan. Historically, Rashid is not often used during the Powerplay, but Chopra suggests that GT might need to adapt if they fail to break the opening partnership of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal early on.

“What about Rashid Khan? Rashid Khan has taken wickets, but he rarely bowls in the Powerplay. Will you want to bring him early this time? If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal don’t get out early, do you want to introduce him slightly early? It’s one thing that they must think about,” Chopra analyzed. With 19 wickets in 15 innings and an economy of 8.77, Rashid’s ability to curb runs and take wickets remains a crucial weapon in the GT arsenal.

The Rise of Yash Raj Punja

Chopra also took a moment to praise Rajasthan Royals’ young find, Yash Raj Punja. As the first UAE-born cricketer to grace the IPL stage, the 19-year-old has made a significant impact that often goes unnoticed. “There is Karamati Khan, who has plenty of experience on one side, but Yash Raj Punja has flown under the radar. Ever since he has come, his performance has been extremely praiseworthy,” said Chopra.

Punja has claimed nine wickets in seven innings at an economy of 8.92. His high-arm action and ability to vary his pace have made him a reliable asset for the Royals. As the tournament reaches its crescendo, young talents like Punja and established stars like Rabada and Archer will be the ones to watch as they fight for the ultimate prize in Indian cricket.
