David Hussey Transitions to New Global Role with Cricket Victoria

In a significant shift for Australian domestic cricket administration, former international batter David Hussey has officially stepped down from his position as Victoria’s Head of Men’s Cricket. Hussey is set to transition into a new, pivotal role associated with an upcoming global venture that Cricket Victoria (CV) is scheduled to launch in the coming weeks. The move marks the end of a highly productive chapter for Victoria’s men’s program, which Hussey has directed since August 2022.

A Legacy of Leadership: From Player to Administrator

David Hussey’s association with Victorian cricket is both deep-rooted and highly decorated. Long before he stepped into the administrative offices at Cricket Victoria, Hussey was a titan on the field for the state. Over a distinguished domestic playing career, he represented Victoria in 87 Sheffield Shield matches, helping lead the state to three coveted Shield titles. His leadership capabilities were also frequently called upon, captaining the Victorian side on 21 occasions.

Following his retirement from playing, Hussey continued to serve the game in coaching and administrative capacities. Notably, he spent years guiding the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) as their head coach. In August 2022, he transitioned from the T20 franchise coaching ranks to take up the mantle of Head of Men’s Cricket for Victoria. In this role, Hussey was tasked with overseeing the entirety of the state’s men’s program, managing player contracts, and playing an active part in the selection panel.

Cultivating Homegrown Talent and Competitive Success

During his tenure overseeing the men’s squad, Hussey championed a philosophy centered on long-term sustainability and local development. He directed a contract list build that leaned heavily into identifying and nurturing homegrown Victorian cricketers. This strategic focus aimed to ensure that local academy products and club cricketers had clear pathways to elite first-class cricket, reinforcing the state’s traditional pipeline of talent.

This developmental approach did not come at the expense of competitive results. Under Hussey’s administrative guidance, Victoria maintained its status as one of the premier powerhouses in Australian domestic cricket. The men’s team reached the Sheffield Shield final in both the 2022-23 and 2025-26 seasons. Additionally, they secured a place in the One-Day Cup Final during the 2024-25 campaign. While the team ultimately missed out on lifting the silverware in these campaigns, the consistent presence of Victoria in major domestic finals underscored the strength and competitiveness of the program Hussey managed.

Tribute and Transition to the Global Stage

The impact of Hussey’s departure was highlighted by Graham Manou, Cricket Victoria’s General Manager of Cricket Performance. Manou expressed deep gratitude for Hussey’s immense contributions to the high-performance system.

“David’s influence on the organisation and the broader Victorian cricket community is immeasurable,” Manou said. “Through his passion for the game, commitment to excellence and investment in people, David has helped strengthen the foundations of our male high-performance program while leaving a lasting legacy across Victorian cricket.”

As Hussey transitions out of his day-to-day administrative duties with the state team, his focus will shift entirely to Cricket Victoria’s forthcoming global venture. While specific details of this new initiative remain confidential ahead of its official launch, Hussey’s appointment highlights the strategic weight Cricket Victoria is placing on its international expansion and future business model.

Coaching Continuity Remains Strong

Hussey’s administrative transition comes during a period of stability for Victoria’s coaching staff. Cricket Victoria recently confirmed that men’s head coach Chris Rogers has re-signed for an additional two seasons. Rogers, who has guided the team to three Sheffield Shield final appearances over the past five seasons, will continue to provide tactical continuity and leadership on the field.

With Rogers locked in to lead the coaching staff and Hussey moving to spearhead Cricket Victoria’s next global chapter, the state program appears well-positioned to maintain its high standards both domestically and on the global stage. The search for Hussey’s successor as Head of Men’s Cricket is expected to begin shortly as the association looks to build upon the solid foundation left behind.
