Bangladesh Applauds Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s Bold Test Debut | Cricket News
A Positive Start in Sylhet
Tanzid Hasan Tamim received his maiden Test call-up for the series against Pakistan. Initially, his debut seemed unlikely. However, an injury to Shadman Islam opened the door, and the young opener seized his chance in the Sylhet Test.
In his first Test innings, Tamim scored 26 runs from 34 balls before being dismissed. Though the score was modest, the Bangladesh team management expressed high satisfaction with both his mindset and approach.
Aggressive Intent from the Off
While fellow opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy departed for a duck, Tamim refused to retreat into a defensive shell. Instead, he demonstrated positive intent from the very first ball, adopting a style reminiscent of a One-Day International innings. Twelve of his 26 runs came through boundaries. He eventually fell while attempting to maintain his aggressive strategy, but chief selector Habibul Bashar Sumon voiced no complaints regarding his mental approach.
Speaking to the media in Sylhet, Bashar said, “It would have been better if the innings was bigger, but he started very well. Of course, he still has a long way to go, and I believe he can go very far. Maybe there was some mental pressure in his first innings of his first Test match. But he is a good player. I hope these starts will turn into big innings in the future because we really need our top-order batters to score big runs.”
Counter-Attacking Approach Encouraged
Bashar also made it clear that the team management actively wanted Tamim to bat aggressively. “This is the kind of batter he is. When we selected him, we told him to play his natural game. The morning conditions were not easy at all. I think some counter-attacking cricket was necessary. Yes, we lost wickets early, which was not ideal, but he batted exactly the way we wanted him to. Of course, in Test cricket he now needs to turn these starts into big innings, and I’m hopeful we’ll see that in the future.”
Long-Term Vision in Selection
Tamim was not originally slated to feature in the playing XI for this Test. Another young prospect, Amite Hasan, was also called up to the squad but continues to wait for his debut. Bashar explained that even players not in the XI are selected with a long-term strategy in mind. “Whenever we pick someone in the squad, we believe they are good enough to be there and capable of playing in the XI. Sometimes team balance keeps players out of the side. But that does not mean we do not have future plans for them. Whoever we pick, we pick after considering their potential and future role in the team.”
Tamim’s debut, while brief, showed exactly the kind of fearless cricket Bangladesh wants from its top order. With the backing of the selectors and management, the young opener looks set to become a vital part of the team’s future plans.
