The Controversy at Dharamshala

The IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala was a high-stakes encounter that left fans reeling. After Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field, the atmosphere was electric. However, the match quickly became defined by a bizarre and pivotal moment: the dismissal of GT opener Sai Sudharsan.

As Sudharsan attempted a shot against Jacob Duffy, his bat struck the stumps after he had already connected with the ball. This incident, occurring early in the chase, served as the catalyst for a significant collapse in the Gujarat Titans’ batting order. RCB ultimately dominated, posting a staggering 254/5—the highest score in an IPL playoff match—led by a blistering 93* from Rajat Patidar. While Gujarat Titans fought back with a resilient 68 from Rahul Tewatia, they ultimately fell short by 92 runs, allowing RCB to secure a spot in the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad.

The Viral Video and the Confusion

Following the match, social media platforms were flooded with a video of former international umpire Anil Chaudhary. In the clip, Chaudhary discusses the technicalities of ‘hit-wicket’ laws, specifically referencing a scenario where a batter’s equipment (like a cap) falls onto the stumps after a shot is completed, suggesting that such an instance would not constitute a hit-wicket dismissal under Law 35.2.

Many fans were quick to link this video to the Sai Sudharsan dismissal, arguing that the umpire had inadvertently admitted the decision was incorrect. The public narrative suggested that because the shot was supposedly ‘completed,’ the dismissal was unfair. However, a closer examination of the facts reveals a significant disconnect between the video and the actual incident on the field.

Fact-Checking the Claims

It has since been clarified that the video of Anil Chaudhary was not recorded in response to the Sai Sudharsan incident. Rather, it was an archived explanation provided in response to a fan’s query regarding a completely separate, unrelated dismissal. The viral spread of this video successfully created a false narrative surrounding the Qualifier 1 match.

According to the MCC Laws of Cricket, specifically Law 35.1 (Out Hit Wicket), a batter is out hit wicket if their bat or body dislodges the stumps while they are in the process of playing the ball. The law states:

  • 35.1.1: A batsman is out hit wicket if the stumps are dislodged by the batsman or his bat while the ball is played and the bowler is in position to bowl.
  • 35.1.1.2: This applies while running for the first run immediately after playing the ball.
  • 35.1.2: If the batsman knocks down the stumps in any of the ways specified before the bowler is in position to bowl, the umpire shall declare a dead ball.

In Sudharsan’s case, the bat hit the stumps while the action was still live, adhering to the standard interpretation of the rule. The online outrage, while passionate, was rooted in a misattribution of an expert’s generic commentary on the laws of the game.

What Lies Ahead for Gujarat Titans?

Despite the setback in Qualifier 1, the tournament is far from over for the Gujarat Titans. The team now enters the next phase of the playoffs with a second chance to reach the final. They are set to face the winner of the Eliminator match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.

The path to the May 31 final in Ahmedabad remains open. With the Eliminator scheduled for May 27 in Mullanpur and Qualifier 2 following on May 29, the intensity of the IPL 2026 playoffs is set to reach its peak. For the Titans, moving past the controversy of the Qualifier 1 dismissal will be essential as they look to capitalize on their remaining opportunity to lift the trophy.
