The Weight of Expectation

In the high-pressure environment of the Indian Premier League, criticism is often the shadow that follows young talent. Riyan Parag, the full-time captain of the Rajasthan Royals for the 2026 season, has faced this reality more than most. With a season tally of 272 runs at a strike rate of 152.80 and an average of 24.72, the numbers may not tell the whole story. For head coach Kumar Sangakkara, the focus remains on the immense character and leadership potential shown by his young charge.

A Strong Endorsement from the Legend

Following a crucial victory against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium—a win that secured the Royals a spot in the playoffs—Sangakkara opened up about the external noise surrounding Parag. Sangakkara: ‘Seen very few players criticised like Parag’ was the sentiment shared by the cricketing great, who noted that this targeted scrutiny has persisted for nearly seven years. According to Sangakkara, the negative discourse often found on social media does not align with the reality of the player he sees in the dressing room.

“When we decided to offer Riyan the captaincy, he was the absolute right guy to lead this franchise,” Sangakkara affirmed. “I have no doubt in my mind. He will grow, he will mature, and he will understand himself and his players more with every passing game.”

It has not been an easy road for the young leader. Parag has navigated personal challenges and a recent physical setback involving a hamstring injury. Despite medical advice suggesting caution, his commitment to the team was on full display during the clash with Mumbai Indians. His cameo of 14 runs off eight balls helped propel the Royals to a total of 205, ultimately securing a 30-run victory.

Sangakkara praised this internal drive, noting, “If you look at the calls he makes as captain, the confidence with which he drives himself, almost on one foot sometimes to come and play, there’s a huge amount of positivity.”

Strategic Flexibility and The Impact Player Rule

Beyond the captaincy, the Royals have been navigating complex strategic decisions regarding the ‘Impact Player’ rule. Sangakkara shed light on the tactical choices made during recent matches, particularly the decision to send Jofra Archer in to bat earlier than expected against Mumbai. The goal, according to the head coach, was to avoid over-relying on Dasun Shanaka as a fifth bowling option.

“Today, if we had pushed another batter, we would have had to bowl four of Dasun Shanaka,” Sangakkara explained. “And that’s a tough one on a wicket like this. So we would like to push as much as possible, extend our resources, and see where we get to.”

Managing Talent for the Future

The management of Ravindra Jadeja also remains a key priority. Dealing with an injury, Jadeja’s usage is being handled with sensitivity to ensure his long-term availability. The coaching staff is taking a measured approach, allowing him the necessary time to recover while still extracting high-level performances when he is fit enough to contribute.

As the Rajasthan Royals look toward the deeper stages of the IPL 2026, the focus on Riyan Parag remains one of support and development. Sangakkara summarized his feelings with pride: “He is a lovely, soft, gentle, really determined, smart young man. He’s learned a lot in the last few years, and he’ll continue on that journey. I’m very, very proud of him.” This backing from such an iconic figure in the sport highlights the immense faith the franchise places in their captain, regardless of the fluctuating statistics on the scorecard.
