Rishabh Pant’s LSG Captaincy Future: Leadership Shake-up Expected for IPL 2027

A Disastrous Campaign for the Super Giants

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) concluded their IPL 2026 campaign on a somber note, finishing at the very bottom of the points table. A final group-stage defeat to the Punjab Kings cemented their position in tenth place, marking the second consecutive year the franchise has failed to qualify for the playoffs under the leadership of Rishabh Pant. The sentiment surrounding the team is one of frustration, particularly given the enormous financial investment made in their marquee signing.

Rishabh Pant joined the franchise as the most expensive player in IPL history, commanding a staggering INR 27 crore price tag. However, the anticipated impact has failed to materialize, leading to calls for a significant change in the team’s hierarchy.

The Statistical Reality of Pant’s Tenure

When LSG acquired Pant from the Delhi Capitals, the expectation was that his aggressive batting and leadership experience would provide the team with a competitive edge. Unfortunately, those expectations have been met with a string of underwhelming performances. In the 2025 season, Pant struggled to find his rhythm, accumulating only 269 runs at a modest average of 24.45. His 2026 campaign showed little improvement, as he managed 312 runs in 13 innings at an average of less than 30 and a strike rate of 138.05.

The leadership aspect of his tenure has been equally concerning. Across 28 matches as captain, Pant has overseen 17 defeats, a record that has left both management and fans questioning his suitability for the role.

Tom Moody Hints at Impending Changes

Following the final match of the season, LSG’s Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, addressed the media with a tone that suggests major structural changes are on the horizon. Moody’s comments during the post-match press conference made it clear that the franchise is in a period of deep reflection.

“When it comes to the leadership of the franchise, it’s certainly something that we’ll be taking some very serious consideration to what it looks like in the future. Like every department, when you do reflect on a season, we will be making some considered decisions,” Moody stated. Given the context of the team’s abysmal performance, it is highly probable that these “considered decisions” will involve the appointment of a new captain for the IPL 2027 season.

Potential Successors for the LSG Captaincy

As the franchise looks to move on from the Pant era, the search for a new leader has already begun. Two primary candidates have emerged in discussions surrounding the team’s future: Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram.

Mitchell Marsh brings a wealth of experience, but his physical fitness remains a significant concern. At 36 years of age, his history of injury setbacks could prove to be a gamble for a franchise desperate for stability.

In contrast, Aiden Markram presents a more compelling case. With a proven track record as a T20 captain—including a successful stint leading Sunrisers Eastern Cape to an SA20 title—Markram possesses the tactical acumen that LSG currently lacks. Having secured victory in 56 out of 110 T20 matches, his leadership profile aligns with the requirements of a team looking to revitalize its fortunes.

The Road to Redemption

The Lucknow Super Giants are at a crossroads. Two successive group-stage exits have clearly taken their toll on the management and the fanbase alike. While the investment in Rishabh Pant was designed to bring glory to the city of Lucknow, it has instead resulted in a period of stagnation. Whether the franchise opts for the experience of Markram or takes another path, one thing is certain: the leadership structure will look very different when the next season commences. The primary objective for the LSG think tank will be to ensure that the mistakes of the previous two seasons are not repeated, paving the way for a more competitive showing in IPL 2027.
