R Ashwin Reflects on Ricky Ponting’s Heartbreak as PBKS IPL 2026 Season Collapses
A Season of Two Halves: The Punjab Kings Downfall
The IPL 2026 campaign for the Punjab Kings has evolved into a narrative of profound disappointment. Once viewed as legitimate title contenders after a blistering start that saw them dominate the first half of the tournament, the franchise is now staring at the abyss of early elimination. With six consecutive losses mounting up, the atmosphere in the camp has shifted from jubilation to desperation.
The latest blow came in Dharamshala on Sunday, May 18, where the team suffered a demoralizing defeat at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). As the final ball was bowled, cameras captured a defining moment of the season: head coach Ricky Ponting, sitting alone in the dugout, staring blankly at the ground. It was a portrait of a legend grappling with the weight of an unexpected collapse.
Ravichandran Ashwin on the Ponting Image
The image of the Australian icon went viral almost instantly, resonating with fans who have followed his storied career. Joining the discourse, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin offered a poignant perspective on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat. Having previously captained the Punjab side, Ashwin expressed genuine sympathy for both Ponting and current captain Shreyas Iyer.
“I saw a powerful picture on TV after the match today,” Ashwin noted. “Ricky Ponting was leaning forward in the dugout, all alone. He must have a lot going on inside his head. They were in the prime position to run away and take the top two spots in this tournament. I think they must be asking themselves where they went wrong.”
The Home Venue Controversy
Beyond the emotional toll, Ashwin directed pointed criticism at the operational strategy adopted by the Punjab Kings management. Specifically, he questioned the franchise’s decision to split their home matches between Mullanpur and Dharamshala.
“I sat on the same chair in 2018. I am not defending them, but the three or four champion teams don’t play at different home venues,” Ashwin argued. “You were winning in Mullanpur continuously, then you went to Dharamshala, and you lost three consecutive home games.”
Ashwin emphasized that the technical disparity between the two venues played a significant role in their downfall. He highlighted that while the soil might be consistent, the variations in altitude, pace, and bounce make the venues fundamentally different. In his view, by constantly shifting home bases, the franchise inadvertently turned their own fixtures into away games, disrupting the rhythm that the players had painstakingly built in the early stages of the season.
Management vs. Performance
The critique did not stop at the choice of venue. Ashwin touched upon the delicate balance between commercial decisions and cricketing success. He suggested that the owners may have prioritized business-driven logistics over the performance needs of the playing squad. According to Ashwin, this instability has left both the young domestic talents and the experienced foreign imports struggling to adapt.
“These are young players, and even foreign players are struggling. There’s a big difference between Mullanpur and Dharamshala when it comes to pace and bounce. The soil is the same, but the altitude is different. This is also an away game for Punjab,” he added.
The Road Ahead
As things stand, the playoff dreams of the Punjab Kings are hanging by a razor-thin thread. To keep their hopes alive, they must secure a victory in their final league stage match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and hope that other results fall in their favor. Whether or not they can pull off a miracle, the image of a dejected Ricky Ponting will likely remain the defining memory of a season that promised so much but delivered heartache.
For a team that started the season with such promise, the remainder of their campaign is now a test of character. The frustration mentioned by Ashwin is palpable, reflecting a sentiment shared by fans who see a team struggling to reconcile its early brilliance with its current, unfortunate reality.
