He needs to improve in ODI cricket: Miraz on Rishad Hossain

The Rise of a Young Talent

At just 23 years of age, Rishad Hossain has already made a significant impression on the global stage. The young leg-spinner rose to prominence during the T20 World Cup, where his ability to challenge elite batting lineups—most notably Australia—catapulted him into the international spotlight. His performances in the shortest format have been marked by aggression and a knack for picking up wickets when needed most.

Transitioning to the 50-Over Format

With Australia now touring Bangladesh for a white-ball series, the conversation has naturally shifted toward team composition. Fans and analysts alike are keen to see if the dynamic Rishad will feature in the starting XI for the ODIs. However, the path from T20 specialist to a consistent ODI bowler is rarely straightforward. Currently, while Rishad boasts a wealth of experience with 57 T20 internationals under his belt, his exposure to the longer format remains limited, with only 19 ODIs played to date. This gap in experience is precisely what the team management is looking to bridge.

The Captain’s Perspective

Bangladesh ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz addressed the media during a pre-match press conference, providing a measured perspective on the youngster’s development. While acknowledging Rishad’s undeniable talent and his experience in Australian conditions through various franchise leagues, including the Big Bash League (BBL), Miraz emphasized that domestic or franchise success does not guarantee immediate translation into the ODI arena.

“Rishad has played domestic cricket there and also featured in a lot of franchise leagues,” Miraz noted. “He is becoming more confident and settling himself well. But if he wants to establish himself further, he needs to perform even better.”

Understanding the Nuances of ODI Cricket

The distinction between T20 cricket and the 50-over format is a common hurdle for many modern players. Miraz highlighted the tactical shift required to succeed in ODIs. “Franchise cricket and ODIs are different games,” the captain explained. “He needs to be more proactive because he hasn’t played many matches in this format. If he gets the opportunity, he will understand it himself.”

Unlike T20 cricket, where the focus is often on rapid containment or quick breakthroughs, ODI cricket demands a higher level of patience, endurance, and strategic adaptability. A bowler must learn when to apply pressure to strangle the scoring rate and when to aggressively hunt for wickets across a longer span of overs.

A Bright Future Ahead

Despite the constructive criticism, the team’s faith in Rishad remains unwavering. Miraz reiterated that the young spinner is viewed as a vital asset to the Bangladesh bowling attack. “Rishad is definitely an important bowler. We trust him,” Miraz affirmed. “But ODI cricket is different from T20. Sometimes you need to control runs, sometimes you need wickets. I think he still needs to improve. He has a bright future and will develop into a better bowler. He will get his chances.”

As Bangladesh looks to the future, the integration of players like Rishad Hossain into the ODI setup is a priority. With the guidance of senior players and the coaching staff, the hope is that Rishad will successfully refine his approach, balancing his natural attacking instinct with the tactical discipline required to excel at the highest level of 50-over cricket. For now, the cricketing world waits to see how the young spinner responds to the challenge set by his captain.
