LPL 2026: Galle Gallants Sign Dasun Shanaka as Pre-Draft Excitement Builds
The Countdown to LPL 2026 Begins
The anticipation for the sixth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) has reached a fever pitch. Cricket fans across Sri Lanka and the world are gearing up for a tournament that promises to be bigger, bolder, and more competitive than ever before. With the tournament schedule now solidified and pre-draft signings hitting the headlines, the structure of the upcoming season is finally taking shape.
Originally slated for late 2025, the tournament was strategically pushed back to accommodate the hectic international schedule, specifically the men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India earlier this year. This calculated move by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) ensures that all venues are in peak condition, providing a world-class stage for the nation’s premier T20 tournament.
High-Profile Pre-Draft Signings
The buzz surrounding the pre-draft period is centered on the strategic roster building of the five participating franchises: Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Dambulla. Each team is looking to establish a core foundation before the main draft takes place on June 1.
Perhaps the most discussed move comes from the Galle Gallants, who have officially signed Dasun Shanaka and fast bowler Eshan Malinga. Shanaka, who shares an IPL connection with the rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, brings a wealth of leadership and experience that will be vital for the Gallants. The recruitment strategy across the league has been equally aggressive:
- Dambulla Sixers: Bolstering their attack and middle order with Dushmantha Chameera and veteran Dinesh Chandimal.
- Jaffna Kings: Retaining their championship pedigree by bringing in Dunith Wellalage and Bhanuka Rajapaksa.
- Kandy Falcons: Securing two of the biggest names in Sri Lankan cricket, Wanindu Hasaranga and Angelo Mathews.
- Colombo Kaps: Focusing on versatility and explosive power with Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis.
The Path to the Draft
The league has streamlined the squad-building process to ensure balance and talent development. Every team is required to field a minimum of 18 players, with the option to expand their roster to 20. A key highlight of the 2026 rules is the mandatory inclusion of at least two Under-23 emerging players, ensuring that the next generation of talent gets a seat at the table. Furthermore, teams are permitted to include up to four foreign players in their starting eleven, maintaining a high level of international quality throughout the tournament.
With the player registration portal now closed, the focus shifts entirely to the June 1 draft, where the remaining squad spots will be filled. Moving away from the auction format used in previous seasons, the return to a draft system aims to create a more balanced distribution of talent across the five franchises.
LPL 2026: Official Schedule and Venues
The tournament is set to kick off on July 17 with a high-stakes rematch of the 2024 final between the defending champions, the Jaffna Kings, and the runners-up, the Galle Gallants. The opening festivities and the first block of matches will take place under the lights at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds in Colombo.
The league will then embark on a national tour, visiting iconic cricketing hubs:
- July 17–19: Opening matches at SSC Grounds, Colombo.
- July 21–26: The Dambulla leg at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.
- July 28–August 2: The Kandy leg at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
- August 5 & 7: Qualifiers and the Eliminator at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
- August 8: The grand finale at the R. Premadasa Stadium, with August 9 held as a reserve day.
As the teams finalize their strategies, the cricketing world waits with bated breath to see how these newly formed squads will perform on the field. The LPL 2026 is poised to be a landmark event in the T20 calendar, blending seasoned international veterans with the hungry, emerging talent of Sri Lanka.
