A Cloud of Controversy Over IPL Player Availability

The conclusion of the IPL 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals has brought more than just the pain of a playoff exit; it has sparked a significant debate regarding player commitment and the integrity of medical reporting. Following the Royals’ defeat to the Gujarat Titans in the second Qualifier, Head Coach Kumar Sangakkara addressed the media with pointed remarks concerning English all-rounder Sam Curran.

The Discrepancy in Fitness Reports

Sam Curran, who joined the Rajasthan Royals following a high-profile trade deal involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson, was officially ruled out of the IPL 2026 season prior to its commencement. The franchise was informed that Curran was suffering from a serious, season-ending groin injury. Consequently, the Royals moved quickly to sign Sri Lankan star Dasun Shanaka as his replacement to maintain their squad depth.

However, the narrative shifted dramatically when Curran was spotted active on the field for his home county, Surrey, in the T20 Blast in England. This appearance occurred precisely while the Rajasthan Royals were fighting to keep their title hopes alive in the IPL playoffs. Reports confirmed that Curran not only participated in the domestic tournament but had been captaining the side, playing in three matches and accumulating 141 runs.

Sangakkara’s Frustration

Speaking to reporters after the Royals’ loss in New Chandigarh, a visibly frustrated Sangakkara did not mince words. He noted that while injuries are an unfortunate reality of professional sports, the timing of Curran’s return to the field for Surrey was highly questionable. The coach remarked, ‘We were told that Sam Curran had a season-ending injury, but I think I saw him playing for Surrey for two or three games now, so that was disappointing. We’d have loved to have had him here playing for us.’

The Royals coach contrasted Curran’s situation with other international players in his squad, such as Adam Milne, Shimron Hetmyer, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, and Kwenna Maphaka. Sangakkara praised these players for their commitment, noting that they had been present, practiced, and supported the team throughout the journey, even when opportunities on the field were limited. He emphasized that it ultimately falls on the individual player to uphold their contractual obligations.

The Need for Stricter BCCI Policies

The incident has reinvigorated calls for a more robust oversight mechanism regarding player availability. Sangakkara believes that the BCCI needs to implement and enforce a stricter policy to ensure that players are not using injury claims as a convenient excuse to skip the tournament. He advocated for a rigorous system that verifies the legitimacy of claims to ensure that franchises are not left in a lurch.

‘A proper, tight policy around that is always a requirement,’ Sangakkara stated. ‘The BCCI has a strict policy on that, and that’s the way it should continue to be, to make sure that contractual obligations are met properly and genuinely.’ The BCCI has recently indicated that players who withdraw from the tournament without a verified, legitimate injury may face a two-year ban from future IPL auctions.

Implications for the Future

As the IPL moves toward the final in Ahmedabad between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Gujarat Titans, the focus on player integrity remains a talking point. For Rajasthan Royals, the absence of a key player like Curran during their campaign represents a significant missed opportunity. This controversy serves as a stark reminder of the tension between international commitments and franchise responsibilities in the modern cricketing landscape. Whether or not this leads to a formal investigation or a permanent change in how player medical reports are processed remains to be seen, but the message from the Rajasthan camp is clear: integrity must remain at the forefront of the league’s success.
