Aiden Markram to Replace Rishabh Pant as LSG Captain in IPL 2027?

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has suggested that the Lucknow Super Giants should consider replacing Rishabh Pant as their captain, citing his tactically weak decisions and the team’s poor performance in the current season.

LSG’s Disappointing Season

The Lucknow Super Giants have had a disappointing season, with only 4 wins in 13 matches, and are currently last on the points table. Despite starting the season with two wins in their first three matches, the team’s performance unraveled soon after, with a streak of 6 losses in a row confirming their elimination from playoff contention.

Speaking on Cricbizz, Michael Vaughan said that while LSG had found a good core to carry into next season, they need to re-evaluate their leadership. “I think there are a few things they have to decide on. Clearly, Justin Langer will be under a huge amount of pressure. I see Tom Moody in the setup; he’s kind of the overall boss of the Lucknow team. Look at the captain, the leadership just doesn’t look right from the owner to the coach to the captain. It doesn’t quite look together,” he said.

Possible Captaincy Change

Vaughan suggested that Aiden Markram could be a potential replacement for Pant as captain. However, he also noted that this would mean having another overseas player in the top five, which goes against the trend of most successful IPL teams having more Indian players in the top five.

Rishabh Pant has not only struggled with his captaincy but also with his form, scoring just 286 runs in 13 matches at an average of 28.60. His strike rate has also been a concern, hovering around 140.

LSG’s Future Plans

The team will play their last match of IPL 2026 against the Punjab Kings in Lucknow on May 23. With the season coming to a close, LSG will need to regroup and reassess their strategy for the next season. Whether Aiden Markram will take over as captain remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – changes are needed for the team to succeed in the future.
