In a historic Major League Cricket (MLC) clash, Owen’s 155 powers Freedom to victory even as Pollard overtakes Gayle in the all-time Men’s T20 run-scoring charts during an absolute run-fest. This high-scoring encounter will be remembered as one of the most remarkable displays of individual power-hitting in recent times, featuring record-shattering innings, all-time career milestones, and dramatic momentum shifts.

Mitchell Owen’s Historic Onslaught

Washington Freedom’s innings was defined entirely by Mitchell Owen, who produced a breathtaking exhibition of batting. Owen smashed 155 runs off just 68 deliveries, writing his name into the history books by registering the highest individual score in MLC history. From the moment he walked out, Owen looked completely unstoppable, targeting the MI New York (MINY) bowlers with ruthless precision and unmatched confidence.

Owen’s march to three figures was remarkably swift. He reached a blistering century in just 41 balls, bringing up the milestone in the 10th over of Freedom’s innings. By that point, he had already cleared the ropes nine times. The pace did not slacken after his century; instead, Owen accelerated further, racing from 100 to 150 in a mere 20 balls. With mathematics on his side and plenty of overs left, Chris Gayle’s legendary T20 record of 175* seemed to be under serious threat, and a double-century in T20 cricket felt like a distinct possibility.

MI New York Pulls Back the Momentum

Despite Owen’s relentless attack, MI New York managed to claw their way back into the contest during the latter stages of the first innings. The MINY bowlers adjusted their lines and lengths, successfully putting the brakes on what looked like a historic total. The breakthrough finally came in the 17th over when Owen was dismissed for a magnificent 155.

Following Owen’s departure, Freedom’s scoring rate plummeted. In an extraordinary display of death bowling, MINY conceded no boundaries between the final ball of the 14th over and the very last ball of the innings. Washington Freedom was restricted to scoring just 36 runs in their final six overs, finishing on 245 for 5. While still a massive mountain to climb, MINY’s late discipline gave them a glimmer of hope heading into the chase.

The Chase: Early Blows by Glenn Maxwell

Chasing a mammoth target of 246, MI New York needed a flying start but suffered a catastrophic opening over. Glenn Maxwell proved to be the undoing of the MINY top order. On the very first over of the chase, Maxwell dismissed Monank Patel, which was quickly followed by the run-out of Quinton de Kock. Within six balls, MINY had lost both of their highly-rated openers.

Maxwell struck again in his second over, getting the crucial wicket of Nicholas Pooran, who was caught at short fine leg. With MINY reeling at 22 for 3, the chase seemed effectively over. The slide continued as the reigning champions slumped further to 64 for 5, leaving them with an seemingly impossible mountain to climb.

Kieron Pollard’s Record-Breaking Masterclass

Despite the dismal start, MI New York refused to capitulate quietly. Kieron Pollard took center stage, anchoring the innings with a masterclass in clean striking and situational awareness. Pollard put together a vital 70-run partnership off 40 balls with Romario Shepherd for the sixth wicket, followed by an unbroken 81-run stand off just 34 deliveries with Corbin Bosch.

This was a relatively unusual innings for the West Indian powerhouse, as he relied heavily on finding the gaps, accumulating 11 fours and only four sixes. However, when the moment arrived to claim one of the most prestigious records in short-format cricket, Pollard did so in his signature style.

Needing to surpass Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of 14,561 runs in all Men’s T20s, Pollard launched Asif Mehmood over long-off for a towering six on the first ball of the 19th over. The hit took him from 79 to 85 in the match, and pushed his career aggregate to 14,567 runs, officially making him the leading run-scorer in Men’s T20 history.

A Centurion’s Finish in Vain

Although the match was well out of reach for MINY—who required 67 runs off the final 12 deliveries—Pollard made sure to give the crowd a finish to remember. Off the final ball of the match, Pollard brought up his second career T20 century, finishing unbeaten on 100 off 56 balls. It was his first T20 hundred since 2018, providing a silver lining to an otherwise tough outing for MI New York.

Ultimately, Washington Freedom secured a comfortable 30-run victory, thanks to Owen’s spectacular 155. Yet, on a night of unbelievable individual performances, both Mitchell Owen and Kieron Pollard ensured their names would be etched forever in T20 cricket folklore.
