Abbottabad canter to National T20 Cup title with dominant all-round display
A Historic Maiden Title for Abbottabad
Abbottabad secured their maiden National T20 Cup title in spectacular fashion, defeating Karachi Whites by nine wickets in a one-sided final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. In what was a highly anticipated rematch of the 2023-24 final, the Shadab Khan-led side showed immense composure and tactical superiority to completely outclass their opponents. Chasing a meager target of 119 runs, Abbottabad raced to victory with 37 balls to spare, successfully avenging their nine-run defeat from the previous edition’s summit clash. The victory was a testament to Abbottabad’s clinical planning and execution on the big stage.
The foundations of this historic triumph were laid by an exceptional bowling performance, followed by a clinical, aggressive batting display. Fast bowler Arshad Iqbal set the tone early in the match, finishing with superb figures of 3 for 28 in his four overs. In reply, former Pakistan Under-19 opening batsman Shahzaib Khan anchored the chase with an unbeaten 54 off 41 deliveries, while the in-form Kamran Ghulam provided the explosive finish with a blistering 45 not out off just 26 balls.
Pitch Conditions Favoring Strokeplay
The pitch at the Gaddafi Stadium became a major talking point ahead of the final. The nature of the playing surfaces in Lahore had dominated cricket discourse during the recent three-match One Day International (ODI) series between Pakistan and Australia, where the final two games were hosted at the same venue. However, this particular pitch, which had remained unused since the first half of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, behaved differently. Sporting a visible green tinge, the surface offered consistent pace and true bounce, allowing batters to play their shots with confidence. As the match progressed, both Shahzaib and Ghulam fully exploited these conditions to demonstrate the true value of strokeplay on a good sporting wicket.
Karachi Whites Suffer Batting Collapse
Earlier in the day, Abbottabad captain Shadab Khan won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that paid rich dividends immediately. Karachi Whites never found their rhythm and were bowled out for a disappointing 118 runs in 18.3 overs due to a combination of disciplined bowling and reckless shot selection. Although Karachi Whites’ openers, captain Saud Shakeel and Abdullah Fazal, managed to collect nine runs from the opening over bowled by Arshad Iqbal, they appeared highly circumspect. The pressure soon told as Fazal tried to break the shackles in the third over. Moving too far across to the leg side, the left-hander was clean-bowled by an accurate delivery from Iqbal.
The wickets continued to tumble during the Powerplay. Young left-handed batsman Haroon Arshad played a couple of elegant strokes to show his potential, but his stay at the crease was cut short when he holed out to deep third man off the bowling of Mohammad Wasim Jnr. Shortly after, the Karachi Whites skipper Saud Shakeel fell victim to left-arm quick Shahab Khan. Trying to drive on the up, Shakeel was caught at cover in the fifth over, leaving his side reeling at 38 for 3 within the first six overs. The situation worsened in the seventh over when wicketkeeper-batsman Saifullah Bangash dragged a delivery from Razaullah onto his stumps, leaving Karachi Whites in deep trouble at 49 for 4.
Middle-Order Struggle and Iqbal’s Double Blow
Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood and Khawaja Nafay tried to rescue the innings from complete collapse. Masood, who survived a close caught-behind shout early in his innings, looked to consolidate alongside Nafay. The duo shared a fighting 27-run partnership off 21 balls for the fifth wicket. However, just as they threatened to rebuild, Arshad Iqbal returned to strike a double blow. He first dismissed Masood, who nicked a well-directed back-of-a-length delivery through to the wicketkeeper. Just four balls later, Iqbal claimed his third wicket of the match by sending Nafay back to the pavilion, effectively breaking the backbone of the Karachi Whites batting lineup.
With the top and middle order back in the shed, it was left to the tail to push the score past the 100-run mark. Fast bowler Saqib Khan emerged as the unlikely top-scorer for Karachi Whites, compiling a run-a-ball 22. He injected some excitement into the innings by hitting the match’s first six in the 15th over, which helped push his team’s score into triple figures. Saqib fought valiantly to lift his team to a respectable total, but his innings was ended by Abbottabad captain Shadab Khan. Shadab took a sensational catch running backward off his own bowling to dismiss Saqib, wrapping up the Karachi Whites innings for 118.
Shahzaib and Ghulam Power the Chase
Chasing a target of 119, Abbottabad’s openers approached the task with composure and steady accumulation. However, the shackles were broken in the fifth over when young Shahzaib Khan took the attack to Mohammad Umar, smashing him for a boundary and a six. The momentum shifted completely in the next over as Shahzaib hit Saqib Khan for back-to-back boundaries (a four and a six), guiding Abbottabad to an imposing 50 for 0 by the end of the Powerplay.
Although the dismissal of opener Afaq Khan briefly slowed down the scoring rate, Shahzaib continued his onslaught. He welcomed spinner Abrar Ahmed into the attack by launching him for a boundary and a massive six over midwicket. Following Afaq’s departure, Shahzaib was joined by the experienced Kamran Ghulam. The pair rotated the strike with ease before Ghulam decided to accelerate. Ghulam targeted Saqib Khan, hitting him for consecutive sixes to bring the target within touching distance. Fittingly, Ghulam sealed the comprehensive victory in the 14th over (13.5 overs total) with a perfectly timed drive over mid-off for a boundary.
A Long-Awaited Triumph
This historic match, which had been rescheduled from its original date of March 18 at Peshawar’s Imran Khan Cricket Stadium due to persistent rain and a waterlogged outfield, ended in absolute jubilation for the Abbottabad squad. Having experienced the heartbreak of a narrow defeat in the previous tournament, this dominant all-round display proved that Abbottabad is a powerhouse of domestic T20 cricket, rightfully lifting their maiden National T20 Cup trophy.
