“Proud of everyone”: Ajinkya Rahane lauds entire KKR team despite disappointing end of IPL 2026
A Resilient Campaign Comes to a Close
The IPL 2026 season for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) concluded with a bittersweet finish at the iconic Eden Gardens. Despite a spirited effort throughout the latter half of the tournament, the team ultimately fell short against the Delhi Capitals in their final league fixture. While the match was essentially a dead rubber with no impact on the top four standings, the narrative surrounding the team focused heavily on the character displayed by the squad under pressure.
Chasing a formidable target of 203 set by the Delhi Capitals, KKR’s pursuit began with promise but faltered as the innings progressed. The team was eventually bowled out for 163 in 18.4 overs, marking a disappointing end to a season that had promised so much more.
The Turning Point at Eden Gardens
The match remained finely poised for a significant duration, particularly while skipper Ajinkya Rahane was at the crease. Rahane, who displayed immense poise and confidence, appeared to have the measure of the Delhi bowling attack. However, a single over from Kuldeep Yadav completely altered the complexion of the contest, dismantling the KKR momentum.
As soon as Rahane departed for the pavilion, the KKR batting unit witnessed a swift collapse, unable to recover from the pressure applied by the Capitals’ bowlers. This collapse proved to be the final chapter in what was a roller-coaster season for the Kolkata franchise.
Reflecting on the Season: Rahane’s Leadership
During the post-match presentation ceremony, Ajinkya Rahane offered a candid assessment of the game and the season at large. Reflecting on the conditions at Eden Gardens, he noted, “The wicket was a little tricky at the start. I was batting really well and knew one batter had to go through, so I tried to take my chances. I was actually looking to target strike rotation as well.”
Despite the heartbreak of missing out on the playoffs, Rahane remained steadfast in his support for his players. He emphasized the remarkable turnaround the team achieved after a dismal start to the campaign. “The situation we were in after six games and then from there coming back, keeping the league alive and playing that kind of cricket needed character, a good attitude, and resilience. I’m really proud of every individual,” he remarked.
Finding Positives in Adversity
Rahane pointed out that the first half of the season was defined by narrow margins and lost key moments. However, the ability of the squad to maintain their morale and continue fighting in a high-pressure environment like the IPL was a testament to their professionalism. “A lot of positives. In the first half of the season, there were key moments where we were losing out, but after that, coming back from there is never easy. IPL is a long tournament with a lot of pressure and high-pressure situations,” the skipper explained.
The collective spirit within the dressing room remained high, even when results were not going their way, which provided the foundation for their late-season surge.
Looking Ahead: Future Planning
As the curtains fall on IPL 2026, the focus for KKR now shifts toward preparation for the future. Rahane confirmed that the team would soon enter a phase of review and planning. “I think at the moment the guys have their commitments. We’ll just go off to our homes, probably take some time off, and then obviously we’ll probably connect over calls or Zoom and have discussions moving forward,” he added.
For Rahane personally, the immediate future involves a return to the roots of the game. After taking a brief period of rest, he intends to participate in the local league in Mumbai. “I’m going to play my local league in Mumbai, which I’m really looking forward to. I’m happy as long as I’m playing cricket. So yes, a couple of days off and then back to cricket,” he concluded.
While KKR may not have achieved their ultimate goal of lifting the trophy, the resilience showcased by the team and the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane serve as a constructive foundation for the upcoming years.
