The intense scheduling of the Indian Premier League often takes a toll on the country’s finest talents. Following Punjab Kings’ recent victory, former international batter and six-time IPL champion Ambati Rayudu has voiced serious concerns regarding the physical and mental state of star left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh. Elaborating on his observations, the phrase “He doesn’t have the same juice” – Ambati Rayudu raises concerns over Arshdeep S highlights the lack of energy and sharpness currently affecting the young bowler’s execution in key moments of the game.

Punjab Kings Win but Arshdeep Singh’s Struggles Continue

Punjab Kings (PBKS) registered a comforting seven-wicket victory against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their final group stage match at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday, May 23. Successfully chasing down a target of 197 runs with two overs remaining, the Shreyas Iyer-led team brought an end to their painful six-match losing streak. However, Arshdeep Singh’s performance remained a major talking point. The left-arm pacer had an extremely difficult outing, returning expensive figures of 0/52 in his three overs at a heavy economy rate of 17.33, which prompted the captain to hold him back from bowling his final over.

Ambati Rayudu Explains the Fatigue Factor

Expressing deep concerns about the bowler’s physical condition, Ambati Rayudu remarked that Arshdeep currently lacks his trademark intensity. He suggested that physical exhaustion has directly impacted his bowling lengths. “He should be mindful of that because his short ball, he doesn’t have a great bouncer at the moment, maybe because of his body being tired or he doesn’t have the same juice as what he did a few months back. But he definitely has to compensate. If he has to overcompensate, he needs to be full,” Rayudu stated.

Tactical Adjustments: Focus on Yorkers and Fuller Deliveries

Rayudu also questioned the tactical strategies adopted by Arshdeep in the powerplay and death overs, advising him to steer clear of short-of-length deliveries. “I just think his lengths [are the problem]. He’s not someone who should be bowling a lot of short deliveries. Even in the death, he should be bowling yorkers. And even with the new ball, whenever he has bowled full, except for the first ball which was driven through the covers, I don’t think his fuller balls went for so many runs as much as the short of length deliveries or the short ball,” Rayudu added, urging a swift technical adjustment.

A Worrying Statistical Trend for Arshdeep

This season has been statistically challenging for the Punjab Kings spearhead. Arshdeep has conceded 541 runs across 14 matches, which is the most by any bowler in the tournament this year. Although he is still the leading wicket-taker for Punjab Kings with 14 wickets, his high economy rate of 10.20 reflects his struggles to contain opposition batters. Furthermore, Arshdeep struggled heavily with his control in the match against LSG, bowling four wide deliveries. This brings his season total to 28 wides, placing him dangerously close to Matheesha Pathirana’s record of 32 wides in a single IPL edition.

Mark Boucher Defends the Left-Arm Bowler

Despite the criticism, former South Africa cricketer Mark Boucher came to Arshdeep’s defense, attributing his current dip in form strictly to fatigue rather than a lack of capability. “I think it’s just being tired [after the T20 World Cup] and this month being the IPL, and he had to play in this. That’s the reason why he’s like that. I don’t think it’s got anything to do with his skill or his talent. At some stage, it [the fatigue] has to catch up with the players. It’s just, it’s natural,” Boucher commented, highlighting the demanding nature of contemporary cricket schedules.
