The Pressure Mounts on Ben Stokes

As England’s Test side gears up for a high-stakes series against New Zealand and a subsequent home campaign against Pakistan, all eyes are fixed firmly on captain Ben Stokes. While his fitness and ability to contribute with the ball have provided a much-needed boost, his recent performances with the bat during his stint with Durham have sparked a wave of concern among former England greats.

A Challenging Period for England

England currently languishes in 7th position on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. With only three wins to their name—achieved against India and Australia—their PCT stands at 31.67. With a finals spot looking increasingly unlikely, the focus has shifted toward stabilizing the side and ensuring the leadership is performing at its peak.

The “Tinkering” Problem

Nasser Hussain, the former England skipper, has been vocal about the technical instability currently plaguing Stokes. According to Hussain, the root of the problem lies in an excessive desire to adjust his game while dealing with the limitations of injury. When Stokes is unable to bowl, his time in the nets often results in constant modifications to his stance, trigger movements, and crease positioning.

Hussain noted, “He tinkers a little bit too much. He went through a phase 18 months ago where he started copying Harry Brook’s very upright stance, whereas Ben has good rhythm with it. And then he’ll tinker with his position on the crease. He’ll tinker with his triggers. He is at the stage of his career now where he should settle on a technique and stop tinkering, simply returning to being the natural player we know.”
