Riyan Parag Slams IPL Commentators, Urges Focus on Cricket Amid 2026 Season
Riyan Parag, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals, has sent a clear message to IPL commentators during the 2026 season, urging them to keep their focus strictly on the game of cricket rather than resorting to personal criticism of players.
Parag Defends Players, Slams Unfair Commentary
The 24-year-old skipper made these remarks following Rajasthan Royals’ dominant seven-wicket victory over LSG in match 64 of the IPL 2026 campaign at Jaipur. Though Parag missed the match due to an injury, he didn’t hold back during the post-match press conference, calling for more empathy and respect toward athletes.
“We perform according to the expectations of the crowd. So, I feel, we should all love cricket and look at it in the same way,” Parag said. “Players are working very hard. It is very easy to say, if a team gets all out for 75 or 80, that they do not know how to play or have the mindset to play. But before that game, there is 3-4 days’ preparation to ensure how we can score 200-250. But sometimes it doesn’t happen.”
He emphasized the human side of cricketers, calling on commentators to be more mindful of their reach and influence. “We are humans too and we make mistakes too. So, I feel, as much as it is happening outside, especially the commentators, their voices are reaching out to the people. I would request them to love cricket. Talk about cricket.”
Sooryavanshi’s Blitz Steals the Show
The Royals’ win was powered by a breathtaking knock from teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old opener smashed 93 runs off just 38 balls, hammering seven boundaries and 10 sixes to dismantle LSG’s bowling attack.
Chasing 221, Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal (43 off 23) forged a 75-run opening stand in only 6.3 overs. Dhruv Jurel‘s unbeaten 53 off 38 further eased the chase, helping RR seal the target in just 19.1 overs.
Parag had high praise for his young teammate: “I think it was his best innings. When he was 5 off 10 or 11, there is always two ways to go. But he took his time. That first big shot off Mayank Yadav over covers gave me satisfaction that he may be small, but he has a larger understanding of the game.”
RR Stay Alive in Playoff Race
With Parag sidelined, Jaiswal stepped in as stand-in captain and led from the front. LSG had posted a formidable 220 thanks to Mitchell Marsh (96 off 57) and Josh Inglis (60 off 29), but RR’s explosive batting lineup made light work of the chase.
The win keeps Rajasthan Royals firmly in contention for the IPL 2026 playoffs. Their next challenge comes against Mumbai Indians in match 69 on Sunday, May 24, a game that could prove decisive in their campaign.
A Message Beyond the Boundary
Parag’s comments resonate beyond the current season. As players face increasing scrutiny on and off the field — from on-field celebrations to off-field incidents — his appeal highlights the need for responsible sports commentary. In a high-pressure environment, even words can carry weight.
As the IPL continues to grow in popularity and intensity, voices like Parag’s serve as a reminder: critique the game, not the person.
