Virat Kohli Cemented as ODI Mainstay; Selectors Monitor Rohit Sharma’s Fitness
The Selection Committee Sets Sights on Afghanistan Series
With the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 fast approaching, the All India Senior Men’s Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is preparing for a pivotal meeting in Guwahati. The primary agenda involves finalizing the Indian squad for the upcoming one-off Test and the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled to take place throughout June.
As the international calendar intensifies, the focus remains on balancing veteran experience with the physical demands of modern cricket. Among the most discussed names, Virat Kohli stands out as a guaranteed fixture. Following a highly productive IPL season, Kohli has solidified his status as the cornerstone of India’s batting order for the 50-over format.
The Rohit Sharma Dilemma
While Kohli’s position appears secure, the selection committee is taking a far more cautious approach regarding the fitness of Rohit Sharma. The current Indian skipper has struggled with injuries throughout the 2026 IPL season. A toe injury sustained during a clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12, followed by a subsequent hamstring issue, has significantly curtailed his participation, limiting him to only seven of his team’s twelve matches.
The selection panel is reportedly concerned about Rohit’s ability to sustain the physical requirements of a full 50-over ODI, especially given that he has been utilized primarily as an ‘Impact Player’ for the Mumbai Indians, a role that spares him from fielding duties for the entirety of the 20-over innings. With the Afghanistan series looming, the selectors are evaluating whether his recovery will allow for a return to full-match fitness.
Managing Pace and Rotation
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ace pacer, is also subject to careful scrutiny. Given his history of injury setbacks, the selection committee is hesitant to rush him back into action. With a critical limited-overs tour of England scheduled for the following month, the decision-makers are keen to avoid any unnecessary risks with Bumrah’s workload.
Shifts in Squad Composition
The upcoming selection meeting is expected to address several other positions within the squad. Reports suggest the selectors are considering significant changes to maintain team balance and performance consistency:
- Test Cricket Adjustments: There is growing dissatisfaction with Sai Sudharsan’s recent form, leading selectors to explore alternatives for the No. 3 spot, with Devdutt Padikkal emerging as a potential candidate.
- Wicketkeeping Dynamics: Rishabh Pant is reportedly under pressure due to performance concerns, with Sanju Samson favored to step in as the primary backup wicketkeeper for the ODIs, supporting KL Rahul.
- Emerging Talent: Jammu & Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi is in line for a maiden Test call-up following a dominant display in the Ranji Trophy, while Prince Yadav is being considered for the ODI squad after standout performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the IPL.
- Potential Returns: Mohammed Shami is being touted for a return to the Test setup to provide experienced depth in the bowling unit.
Series Schedule
The series is set to commence shortly after the IPL Final on May 31. The one-off Test will be hosted at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, starting June 6. The ODI series, where both Kohli and Rohit are expected to feature, will follow:
- First ODI: June 14, Dharamsala
- Second ODI: June 17, Lucknow
- Third ODI: June 20, Chennai
As the selection committee convenes, the primary objective remains clear: building a robust squad capable of conquering the challenges posed by Afghanistan while ensuring the long-term health and availability of the team’s most valuable players. The coming weeks will reveal the direction the selectors intend to take as India looks to refine its ODI blueprint for the future.
