Following the festive period of Eid-ul-Adha, the cricketing nation will witness the formation of a new board, a process that has already commenced with the selection of councillors. Intriguingly, the draft voter list has revealed several prominent and influential names from Bangladesh cricket, signaling a deep engagement from various stakeholders.
Among the most anticipated inclusions is former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad, who is slated to become a BCB voter for the very first time. This marks a notable moment, as a currently active and highly respected player potentially steps into the administrative electoral process, reflecting a growing connection between on-field stalwarts and the governance of the sport. Accompanying him on this significant list is Khaled Mahmud Sujon, a former BCB director and ex-captain, whose extensive experience and long-standing involvement in cricket administration make his presence a familiar and influential one.
Distinguished Personalities and Former Captains Join the Fray
The depth of cricketing talent and experience on the draft list extends far beyond these two stalwarts. Several other former captains, nominated by BCB president Tamim Iqbal, are also set to participate in the electoral process. These include Shafiq-ul-Haq Heera, a figure known for his contributions to the sport, and Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, who recently served as the chief selector. The current chief selector, Habibul Bashar Sumon, another esteemed former captain, further strengthens the list of experienced cricketing minds poised to influence the board’s direction.
The Cricketers’ Welfare Association (CWAB) has also played a pivotal role in nominating key individuals. Former cricketer Shahriar Hossain Biddut has been put forward as a voter by the association, underscoring the collective voice of players in the administrative framework. Other former players who have found their names on the draft councillor list include Syed Rasel, Nadif Chowdhury, Nazmul Hossain, Dollar Mahmud, and Shamsur Rahman Shuvo. These individuals, having contributed to Bangladesh cricket at various levels, now have the opportunity to shape its future off the field. Adding a unique dimension to the list is popular commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi, who shared the age-level cricketing journey with icons like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, bringing a contemporary perspective to the administrative discussions.
Further enhancing the diversity of the voter pool are names such as Naeem Islam, Talha Jubair, Nafees Iqbal, and Nazimuddin. These former cricketers are set to become councillors under Category-3, a significant segment that accounts for a total of 42 votes within the BCB election structure. This category encompasses a wide array of influential organizations and institutions crucial to the fabric of Bangladesh. Among the organizations represented are Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Bangladesh Police, both major national entities. Furthermore, several key education boards, including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Jashore, Cumilla, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Dinajpur, are included, highlighting the broad-based representation across the country’s educational landscape. Prestigious universities such as the University of Dhaka, University of Chittagong, University of Rajshahi, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Khulna University, Jagannath University, and Bangladesh Agricultural University also fall under this category, bringing academic and youth development perspectives to the table. The National Sports Council (NSC), a central body for sports governance, is also a vital component of Category-3, reinforcing the comprehensive nature of this electoral group.
Beyond the former players and institutional representatives, club representatives also form a crucial part of the councillor list, reflecting the grassroots and competitive club cricket structure of the nation. Fahim Sinha from Abahani Limited, Masuduzzaman from Mohammedan Sporting Club, Rafiqul Islam from Gazi Group, Tanzil Chowdhury from Prime Bank, and Ishraque Hossain from Brothers Union are among the prominent club figures included. Old DOHS is represented by Tamim Iqbal, while Amzad Hossain from Tri State Cricketers, Mirza Yasser Abbas from Azad Sporting, Israfil Khosru from Exium Cricketers, Rafiqul Islam Babu from Indira Road Krira Chakra, and Shanian Taneem from Dhaka Mariners Youngs Club complete the list of club representatives, signifying the deep ties between clubs and the national board.

The BCB Election Process: Key Dates and Structure
The upcoming BCB election will adhere to a structure similar to previous years, with a total of 23 positions to be filled across three distinct categories. Specifically, 10 positions will be contested from Category-1, 12 from Category-2, and 1 from Category-3. This categorization ensures a balanced representation from different facets of Bangladesh cricket, from district and divisional associations to clubs and various institutional bodies.
The electoral timeline is meticulously planned, with several key dates leading up to the final vote. The final voter list is scheduled for publication on May 19, an essential step in formalizing the electorate. Following this, the process moves to nomination submissions and verification, culminating in the announcement of the final candidate list on May 25. This phase is crucial for establishing who will be vying for the coveted positions on the board. Between June 1 and June 6, E-ballots and postal votes will be dispatched to eligible voters, allowing for remote participation. These votes must be submitted and reach the returning officer’s office at the BCB by 1 PM on June 7, ensuring all votes are accounted for before the main polling day.
The much-anticipated election itself is scheduled to take place on June 7, from 10 AM to 4 PM, within the BCB board room. This will be the culmination of weeks of preparation and campaigning, where the future direction of Bangladesh cricket will be decided. To maintain transparency and efficiency, the results of the election will be announced promptly at 6 PM on the very same day, bringing an end to the electoral proceedings and ushering in a new era for the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
